چکیده

Retirement communities not only reflect, reproduce and emplace very specific ideas about how and where to enjoy retirement Laws 1995; McHugh 2000), but they are implicated in and are the products of the commodification of later life. As commodities, the effectiveness and therefore the content of advertise¬ ments used to attract potential residents play a crit¬ ical role in promoting the amenities and lifestyle offered by retirement communities. This paper exam¬ ines the type of images used in the marketing litera¬ ture, essentially elaborate advertisements, produced by retirement communities in order to promote the lifestyle they offer. As idealized representations of reality these advertisements provide messages and information to older people about the most appropri¬ ate way to enjoy later life. The life described cham¬ pions successful ageing and agelessness while at the same refuting old age and agerelated illness. How¬ ever, as will be shown the representations of reality depicted are not uniform.

Retiree health insurance for public school employees: does it affect retirement?

Despite the widespread provision of retiree health insurance for public sector workers, little attention has been paid to its effects on employee retirement. This is in contrast to the large literature on health-insurance-induced "job-lock" in the private sector. I use the introduction of retiree health insurance for public school employees in combination with administrative data on their retir...

The erosion of retiree health benefits and retirement behavior: implications for the disability insurance program.

The effects of retiree health insurance on the decision to retire have not been examined until recently. It is an area of increasing significance because of rising health care costs for retirees, the uncertain future of Medicare, and increased life expectancy. In general, studies suggest that individual retirement decisions are strongly responsive to the availability of retiree health insurance...

Does Retiree Health Insurance Encourage Early Retirement?

The strong link between health insurance and employment in the United States may cause workers to delay retirement until they become eligible for Medicare at age 65. However, some employers extend health insurance benefits to their retirees, and individuals who are eligible for such retiree health benefits need not wait until age 65 to retire with group health coverage. We investigate the impac...
